PORN!

something I find really annoying is the internet’s in general, but specifically the Guardian’s (which is suppose to be a serious newspaper, but reminds you slightly too frequently that it isn’t), coverage of proposed laws to make porn actors/actresses (well, just actors probably) wear condoms. There have been at least two stories with them interviewing porn stars about this, and it’s a blatant attention grab to stick a porn star on the front page.

Let’s search my deepest feelings for my opinions on this topic.

I…

don’t care.

How can anyone care? Okay, there are certain cinematic niches where the existence of a non-permeable membrane over one’s member does negatively impact the desired result, but I’m pretty sure those genres were only pioneered for their novelty value and nobody’s really that interested. Connoisseurs will perhaps have strong viewpoints, but they must be the only ones.

I am not really interested in the other issues. I don’t really care that it’s objectifying. I think it’s self evident that it is, but I also think it’s self evident that that’s what the market generally wants. Humans, to the best of my knowledge, are the only animal that tries to make sex ‘nice’. And then we act surprised when other urges creep in.

I don’t really care that it’s exploitative. I think it’s self evident that it is. On the other hand, most non-pornographic employment is exploitative and far more widespread. Porn is no worse, it just exploits in different ways. Some people are okay with it. Some aren’t. People don’t generally get forced into it. People do generally get forced into other exploitative employment.

Porn adheres to a universal phenomenon: People aren’t nice.

At least it’s not another Julie Bindel article, I guess.
